In the bowels of Vancouver Island.
We would spend several hours working in the caves. My mind would visualize the amount of rock that was nestled just over my head. Thoughts of cave-ins, earthquakes, etc. danced through my head. How long could I survive on the water dripping from the ceiling? Could I live of my shoe leather? Sometimes, you had to lay back and just say that everything is just cool...and it was.
Archaeology!
I've been very lucky in archaeology within the last couple of years. I have returned to Barkley Sound three times to participate in full scale excavations.
In August of last summer I was asked to assist in cave archaeology up on the north end of the island. This experience was quite different than midden excavation. Instead of taking a boat to the site we would crawl on our stomachs through passages to reach our unit. Some caves were mapped at 1o kms! We certainly did not go that far. I was very impressed with the concern taken to preserve the fragile environment in those dark caves.
